Apple Crisp
This delicious apple crisp has tender juicy apples topped with buttery and sweet crisp topping. It’s the perfect fall dessert!

This summer has been unbearably long, and I’m so excited that fall is finally here! My favorite apple farm is now open and slinging apple cider slushies and apple cider doughnuts, and we have visited an embarrassing amount of times for fall treats. It’s time to enjoy all things apple! This apple crisp is one of my favorite fall desserts, and it’s the perfect way to showcase that delicious apple flavor. Although the recipe below calls for Granny Smith apples, I’ve made it with a variety of apples (often just mixing and matching based on what I have available in the house) and it has always come out delicious. So no worries if you are not a fan of Granny Smith – you still have plenty of delicious options!

This apple crisp is so cozy and comforting, and I love that it’s easy to make too! It’s perfect for sharing with friends, or just enjoying on a chilly evening. The combination of oats, brown sugar, apples, and cinnamon is totally fantastic. It’s definitely a comfort food dessert!

I like to serve this apple crisp with whipped cream or vanilla ice cream, and caramel sauce drizzled over the top. There’s something so magical about the combination of apples and caramel! The leftover crisp will keep in the fridge for several days, and I think it’s just as delicious warmed up the next day. We will definitely be making this apple crisp all through the fall!

Ingredients
for the crisp topping:
- 1/2 cup flour
- 1/2 cup old fashioned oats
- 1/2 cup brown sugar
- 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1/3 cup butter cold
for the apple filling:
- 2 pounds granny smith apples peeled and sliced
- 3 tablespoons butter melted
- 2 tablespoons flour
- 3 tablespoons water
- 1 tablespoon lemon juice
- 1/2 teaspoon vanilla
- 1/4 cup brown sugar
- 1 teaspoon cinnamon
- pinch of salt
for serving:
- whipped cream or ice cream
- caramel ice cream topping
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 375. In a small bowl, whisk together the flour, oats, brown sugar, baking powder, cinnamon, and salt. Grate in the cold butter and cut in using a pastry blender or two knives, until the pieces are no bigger than pea sized. Chill until ready to use. To make the filling, in a large bowl whisk together the melted buter and flour until blended, then whisk in the water, lemon juice, and vanilla. Add the brown sugar, cinnamon, and salt. Add the apples to the bowl and toss to coat them evenly with the butter mixture.
- Pour the apples into a 9 x 9 baking dish, then sprinkle the crisp topping evenly over the top. Bake in the preheated oven for 35 minutes, until the topping is golden brown and the filling is bubbling. Let sit 10-15 minutes before serving. To serve, top with whipped cream or ice cream, and drizzle with caramel sauce.
