Over the last year, my two oldest kids have become obsessed with bagels. My oldest would happily eat a bagel every morning for breakfast, and we go through cream cheese like nobody’s business. I’ve been trying to keep the fridge and freezer stocked with bagels, but they go through them so fast it feels like a losing game. Since I don’t particular like our grocery store’s bagels, and my favorite bagel shop is way on the other side of town, I decided it was time to start experimenting with making my own bagels. I’ve made asiago cheese bagels and parmesan bagels in the past, but I thought it would be fun to experiment with some other flavors as well!

My kids love these homemade bagels just as much as (probably more than!) store-bought bagels, and they are way less expensive. They’re easy to make with household staples, and relatively quick to make. Within a few hours, I can have a week’s worth of bagels ready for them, with very little effort on my part. It’s a mom win! These bagels are one of their favorite flavors, and they are super easy to make using everything bagel seasoning. I love the Trader Joe’s brand, but I’ve seen it everywhere from the grocery store to Target or Walmart in the spice section. It adds so much delicious flavor and crunch to these bagels, and makes them extra special!

These bagels freeze really well, and to reheat them I either leave them in the fridge overnight and then pop them in the toaster in the morning, or defrost them in the microwave at 50% power for a minute or so. I love having a bag of them in the freezer that the kids can pull out as needed to make their own breakfasts. These homemade everything bagels are so delicious, and perfect for busy mornings!

Prep Time:20 minutes
Cook Time:28 minutes
rise time:1 hour 30 minutes
Total Time:2 hours 18 minutes

Ingredients

  • 2 cups warm water
  • 2 packets active dry yeast
  • 2 tablespoons honey
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 4 1/2 – 5 1/2 cups flour
  • 1 tablespoon brown sugar
  • 2 tablespoons everything bagel seasoning

Instructions

  • In a large bowl or the bowl of a stand mixer, combine the warm water, yeast, and honey. Let sit until bubbled and foamy. Add the salt and 4 cups of flour, and mix until combined. Add the remaining flour, 1/4 cup at a time, until a smooth and non-sticky dough forms (I used about 5 cups total). Knead until elastic, then place in a lightly greased bowl to rise until doubled in size, about one hour.
  • After one hour, punch down the dough and divide into 15 equal sized pieces (about 3 ounces each). Roll each into a ball and place on a lightly greased baking sheet. Cover and let rise 30 minutes. After thirty minutes, push your finger through the middle of each bagel to make a bagel shape and return to the baking sheet.
  • Preheat the oven to 400. Bring a large pot of water to a boil and add the brown sugar. Add bagels to the water, 3-4 at a time, and cook for two minutes, then flip and let cook for another 30 seconds. Remove the bagels one at a time and place them on the prepared baking sheet (you will most likely need two baking sheets to fit all of the bagels). Sprinkle each bagel with the everything bagel seasoning. Bake 28-35 minutes, or until golden brown. Remove and let cool before slicing and serving.
