Oh my goodness, these pretzel dogs are fantastic! As a general rule, I hate hot dogs, but it’s strange what pregnancy cravings can do to a person. Over the summer, when I was nearing the end of my pregnancy with my little boy, these homemade pretzel dogs were one of the few foods that sounded good to me (in addition to corn on the cob and fresh cherries, which I ate for nearly every meal). Even with my giant nine month pregnant belly and overwhelming exhaustion, I could whip up a batch of these beauties and have something delicious for dinner. They’re so easy to make, and my whole family loves them too!

As someone who generally doesn’t like hot dogs, I am pretty choosy about the brand I use to make these pretzel dogs. My favorite are the Kirkland brand beef hot dogs from Costco. They come with twelve in the package, which is perfect for the amount of pretzel dough this recipe makes. If you’re making them with an 8-count package of hot dogs, you could either cut the dough into 8 pieces and have each hot dog have a thicker pretzel wrapping, or you can use 1 1/2 packages. These pretzel dogs are my twelve year old’s favorite meal, and she loves to help me make them. They’re so easy she can almost make them herself!

Every time I post some variation of a pretzel recipe, I get asked whether it’s actually necessary to boil them, and the answer is yes! That’s what makes them pretzels as opposed to dinner rolls. And if you love soft pretzels as much as I do, you definitely need to try my favorite soft pretzel recipe too!

Prep Time:20 minutes
Cook Time:12 minutes
Rise Time:1 hour
Total Time:1 hour 32 minutes

Ingredients

  • 3/4 cup warm water
  • 2 teaspoons sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons active dry yeast
  • 2 1/4 cups flour
  • 1 tablespoon butter melted
  • 10 cups water
  • 2/3 cup baking soda
  • 12 hot dogs
  • 1 large egg yolk + 1 tablespoon water whisked together
  • pretzel salt

Instructions

  • In a large bowl or the bowl of a stand mixer, mix together the warm water, sugar, and salt. Sprinkle the yeast over the top and let stand five minutes, until foamy. Add the flour and butter and mix until combined. Knead 5-10 minutes, until smooth and pliable. Form the dough into a ball and place in a lightly greased bowl. Cover and let rise 1 hour, or until doubled.
  • Preheat the oven to 450. Line a large baking sheet with parchment paper and spray with cooking spray. Heat the water and baking soda to boiling. While the water is boiling, gently punch down the dough and roll it out into a 12 x 18 rectangle. Cut the dough into 12 equal strips, then wrap the strips around each of the hot dogs, pressing the ends tightly into the dough.
  • Place the wrapped dogs one at a time into the boiling water for 30-60 seconds, then remove to the prepared baking sheet. Brush the top of each dog with the egg wash, then sprinkle with salt. Bake 12-15 minutes, or until golden brown. Remove and let cool slightly before serving.
