If you had asked me ten years ago whether I would ever be a person who makes my own homemade ketchup, I would probably have laughed and said no. But here we are! You may be wondering, why on earth would someone need to make their own ketchup? There are a huge number of varieties at the grocery store, it’s very affordable, and making your own ketchup just seems like a lot of work. And yes, all of those things are true, (although the last one doesn’t really hold up – it’s actually easy to make!).

But the combination of having an abundance of garden tomatoes, a picky family who only likes a certain brand of ketchup, and running out of said brand led me to search for a ketchup recipe online. And lo and behold, it’s actually way easier to make than I thought! Not only that, but my homemade ketchup tastes better than any of the store-bought ketchup we’ve found. It’s a total win!

You can definitely make this recipe with store-bought tomato sauce if you prefer, but I used the homemade tomato sauce I made with our garden tomatoes. The tomato sauce is quick and easy to make, and once you’ve processed the tomatoes, the rest of the steps are easy peasy. You’ll just combine the tomato sauce with all of the seasonings in a pot, bring it to a simmer, and then let it simmer and thicken. You can store it in the fridge for several weeks, or in the freezer for several months. I like to freeze it in my two cup Souper Cubes containers, so I can thaw the perfect amount to refill my squeeze bottle when we run out. This homemade ketchup is so good!
