My husband Geoff absolutely loves Indian food, and could probably happily eat it for every meal. Whenever we’re stuck on what to order for dinner, Indian food is always his top suggestion. (I definitely enjoy it too, but not to the point that I could eat it every single day. 🙂 ) We’re trying to cut down a little on our restaurant budget right now, though, so I’ve been working on developing recipes to make some of our restaurant favorites at home. This chicken tikka masala recipe is totally fantastic, and I don’t even miss the restaurant version when I make this at home! It’s so full of delicious flavors, and tastes amazing.

This chicken tikka masala is loaded with juicy and flavorful chunks of chicken, in a creamy and delicious tomato-based sauce. I know I’m probably in the minority, but I’m not a huge fan of chicken thighs, so I like to make mine with chicken breasts. This recipe will work well with either chicken breasts or thighs, so use whatever you prefer. As far as the spices, I’ve found everything except the methi powder at my local grocery store. The methi powder (which is ground fenugreek) is available on Amazon, and pretty affordable. It adds a really delicious flavor to the dish, so I think it’s definitely worth adding. This chicken tikka masala is one of our favorite main dishes!

Ingredients

for the marinade:

  • 2 pounds chicken breast cut into one inch pieces
  • 1 cup plain yogurt
  • 2 tablespoons lemon juice
  • 2 teaspoons cumin
  • 1 teaspoon black pepper
  • 2 teaspoons garam masala
  • 1 teaspoon methi powder
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon ground ginger

for the sauce:

  • 1 tablespoon unsalted butter
  • 1 teaspoon minced garlic
  • 2 teaspoons ground coriander
  • 2 teaspoons methi powder
  • 2 teaspoons garam masala
  • 1 teaspoon cumin
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 14.5 ounce can tomato sauce
  • 2 tablespoons tomato paste
  • 1 1/2 cups heavy whipping cream

Instructions

  • Add the yogurt, lemon juice, cumin, black pepper, garam masala, methi powder, cinnamon, salt, and ginger to a medium bowl and whisk to combine. Add the chicken to the bowl and toss to coat the chicken pieces. Cover and refrigerate for at least two hours or up to overnight.
  • When ready to cook, add the butter to a large skillet and melt over medium heat. Add the chicken to the skillet, discarding the excess marinade. Cook the chicken until browned and cooked through. Add the garlic, coriander, methi powder, garam masala, cumin, paprika, and salt to the skillet and stir to combine. Add the tomato sauce, tomato paste, and whipping cream. Bring the sauce to a simmer, then reduce heat to medium low and simmer until thickened, about 15 minutes. Serve hot over basmati rice.
