It’s funny to me that dirty soda is having a moment right now, because I’ve been on the dirty soda train for over a decade! There are a few cute little soda shops opening near me in Portland (like the adorable Fizz N Sip) , and I saw this week that even McDonald’s is trying to jump on the dirty soda trend. I grew up in the land of flavored sodas and giant sugar cookies (also known as Utah) but for the last ten years since we moved to Oregon I’ve had to make my own sodas at home. And let me tell you, I have reached expert level! But since it’s unlikely that I’m going to start my own soda shop, I figured I might as well just share some of my favorites with you. First up: Dirty Dr. Pepper!

Here’s the thing – flavored sodas are all about your personal taste. I prefer diet soda (because I don’t like the taste that regular soda leaves in my mouth) but regular soda works great too. And if you’re not a Dr. Pepper fan, this recipe works great with Diet Coke too. (Or even Diet Pepsi, which is my husband’s favorite, but I prefer to look down on him for his taste in soda.)

What Makes It a Dirty Soda?

I’m pretty sure the term “dirty soda” originated with the OG flavored soda shop, Swig, but it basically just means a soda with flavors/purees/syrups/cream/etc. added to it. I’ve seen some skepticism/vitriol about flavored sodas on the internet lately, and I would just say: 1) no one is forcing you to drink them, 2) I have no other vices, so let me add flavoring to my sodas if I want to, and 3) don’t knock it until you’ve tried it!

The basic elements of this drink are: coconut cream + lime juice + cola/Dr. Pepper. I really like the Coco Real cream of coconut, and I can usually find it at the grocery store near me. If it’s not available, you could easily substitute coconut coffee syrup (I would use about half a tablespoon) and a little splash of half and half or heavy cream. Coconut flavored coffee creamer would also work! Fresh lime is amazing, but when I don’t have it on hand I use about half of a True Lime packet. The combination of flavors is totally delicious, and it’s a little treat that makes my day better!
