This savory and delicious garlic parmesan bread twist is easy to make and the perfect complement to any soup or pasta dish!

As someone who makes homemade soup at least once a week, I’m always on the lookout for more delicious homemade bread recipes. There really is no more comforting and cozy meal than a bowl of soup and a piece of warm, freshly baked bread! Bread is one of my favorite things to bake, and I bake some form of bread several times a week. And yet somehow there is always room for another good recipe! I had the idea for this garlic parmesan bread twist a while ago, but when I finally figured the recipe out, the finished product exceeded all of my expectations. The bread is tender, soft, and fluffy, with the perfect buttery garlic parmesan flavor. It looks absolutely gorgeous, but it’s surprisingly simple to shape. It is a dinner time win!

Obviously there are lots of other fantastic bread recipes on the blog (these homemade Olive Garden breadsticks and these pull apart rolls are some of my favorites to go with soup) but this bread twist is something special! The flavors are amazing, and the texture is perfection. The outside gets crisp, while the inside stays soft and tender. The buttery garlic parmesan mixture distributes beautifully throughout the bread. It really is everything I could wish for in a bread side!

Some of my favorite soups to serve with this bread are this roasted tomato soup, this sausage tortellini soup, and this pasta e fagioli soup. The flavors complement each other perfectly! And as much as I love it with soup, this bread is also fantastic with pasta dishes like my favorite spaghetti and meatballs, or this delicious chicken penne pasta. I mean, you really can’t go wrong!

Ingredients
for the dough:
- 1 cup and 2 tablespoons warm water
- 1 1/4 teaspoons yeast
- 2 tablespoons sugar
- 1 1/2 teaspoons salt
- 3 tablespoons canola oil
- 3 – 3 1/4 cups flour
for the topping:
- 4 tablespoons butter softened
- 1 teaspoon garlic salt
- 1 teaspoon dried parsley
- 1 teaspoon dried basil
- 2 tablespoons grated parmesan cheese
Instructions
- In a large bowl or the bowl of a stand mixer, dissolve the yeast and sugar in the warm water. Let sit until foamy and bubbly. Add the salt, oil, and two cups of flour, and mix to combine. Add the remaining flour, 1/4 cup at a time, to form a soft dough that pulls away from the sides of the bowl. Knead until smooth, then place in a greased bowl, cover and let rise for one hour.
- Preheat the oven to 350. Roll the dough out into a large rectangle. Mix together the butter, garlic salt, parsley, basil, and parmesan cheese. Spread the butter mixture evenly over the dough rectangle. Roll the dough up into a cylinder.
- Using a sharp knife, cut the cylinder down the middle lengthwise, leaving about an inch at the top. Twist the two long pieces of dough around each other, then tuck in both ends to form a loaf. Place the loaf on a parchment lined baking sheet and let rise for 30 minutes.
- Bake 20-25 minutes, or until golden brown.
